Phonics

Every child deserves success right from the start. We know that the sooner children learn to read, the greater their success at school. This is why we put reading at the heart of what we do.

What is Read Write Inc?

We use a teaching programme called Read Write Inc. to teach our children to read and write. Read Write Inc. (RWI) is a phonics programme which helps children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. We begin the programme in Reception and will continue teaching RWI to children until they can read fluently.

RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at https://www.ruthmiskin.com/parentsandcarers/

What is No Nonsense Spelling?

In KS2, children follow the No Nonsense Spelling scheme. This scheme uses a similar structure to phonics sessions by teaching input, practising and then applying within the regular sessions. The children begin to learn spelling rules and explore patterns as well as learning how to spell the words on the National curriculum spelling lists.

When following this teaching sequence, the children record their learning through individual Spelling Journals.

These journals travel to and from school, allowing the children time to revise and practise the rules and patterns.

Following this, the children have weekly opportunities to apply the rules and patterns through independent application - this could be through free writing, peer assessment or dictation.
